The Extinct Alphabet Book by Jerry Pallotta, illustrated by Ralph Masiello Lois Elhert hides a heart in each of her books. Look in all of his books for his dog, Pinkerton, and cat, Secondhand Rose. Sometimes his wife, Laurie, is included too. Marc Brown hides the names of his kids, Tucker, Tolon, and Eliza. Finally, check out the photos in the zookeeper’s house. It’s hard to find! We also like to spot the mouse who’s hauling a banana. Look for the red balloon on every spread. It takes the mother bunny a full hour to put her baby to bed. Look for a white mouse on every color page spread and also check out the clock in the room. How about you? What things have you noticed in picture books that are hidden away, or, a signature reference, in plain sight by your favorite illustrators? Thanks for sharing! Secret Things to Spot in Famous Picture Books Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown, illustrated by Clement Hurd We loved to figure out what surprises illustrators left to be discovered. I think it was my husband who pointed out the red balloon hidden in Goodnight, Gorilla to me. My husband and I delighted in searching for the mouse in Goodnight Moon with our kids. I recommend this book to all who are interested in knowing what their children, grandchildren and more distant offspring will be doing in the centuries to come.Įntering Space: Creating a Spacefaring Civilization (2000) by Robert Zubrin is a remarkable book the gives a remarkable view of how humanity can actually go into space. The book begins with the current state of space exploration: capabilities, missions, goals, technologies, etc., It then begins to discuss the near future, including missions to mars, returning to the moon, and then progressing along a logical path into the future of space exploration. (Also, I plan on going to this year's Space Development Conference in Florida, where Zubrin will speak). Having read his previous book 'The Case For Mars', I was expecting optimism and brilliance, and this more than delivered. All of which are warranted, as Zubrin is clearly the most visionary, optimistic, and forward thinking aeronautical engineer around. Zubrin blew my mind a number of times, and in later chapters it appears that Zubrin is blowing his own mind, based on the prevalence of conclusions he makes accentuated with exclamation marks in ellipses (!!!). This is the future of human civilization and it is astounding. In Mediocristan, randomness is highly constrained, and deviations from the average are minor. To explain how and why Black Swans occur, Taleb coins two categories to describe the measurable facets of existence: Extremistan and Mediocristan. Once Taleb introduces the concept of the Black Swan, he delves into human society and psychology, analyzing why modern civilization invites wild randomness and why humans can neither accept nor control that randomness. The fall of the Berlin Wall, the 1987 stock market crash, the creation of the Internet, 9/11, the 2008 financial crisis-all are Black Swans. Taleb’s thesis, however, is that Black Swans, by their very nature, are always unpredictable-they are the “unknown unknowns” for which even our most comprehensive models can’t account. They compel human beings to explain why they happened-to show, after the fact, that they were indeed predictable. They are disproportionately impactful and, because of that outsize impact,.The Black Swan is named after a classic error of induction wherein an observer assumes that because all the swans he’s seen are white, all swans must be white. This book analyzes so-called “Black Swans”-extremely unpredictable events that have massive impacts on human society. The Black Swan is the second book in former options trader Nassim Nicholas Taleb’s five-volume series on uncertainty. 1-Page Summary 1-Page Book Summary of The Black Swan What age would I recommend this to? Well, Idon't recommend reading it to a toddler as a bed time story, but aside from that, I don't think it has an age limit. Terry Deary is seriously the best and Martin Brown's illustrations are amazing. But I think I appreciated it so much more now than I did back then. I read this many years ago, when I was inabout year 6. My point is, Horrible Histories is one of my favourite books series, tv series, song series.(is that even a thing? I don't know). And the songs are just wow.but I'mgoing a bit off track here. I think I have seen every episode maybe 4 or 5 times - it's my go to show when I'm ill or upset, because it always makes me smile. Thencame the live-action tv series which I am absolutely mad about. It's a shame that I only discovered the book series after I saw this show but ever since I picked up the first one of these books - not that I can even remember which it was - I have been in love with them. That was my first taste ofhorrible histories. It didn't last very long, but it was about these two kids who travel in time and see all these horrible events. When I was about 9, there was this animated series on tv. I highly recommend the book it is very interesting I loved it so do try it because it is really good Week 19: A book by an author who has more than one book on your TBR Read as part of the Around the Year in 52 books challenge. She’s also brave and beautiful and reminds me of the home I left behind three years ago. Sure, she’s stubborn, distracting and can’t stay out of harm’s way. Although…it is becoming less and less of a hardship to have her around. I’m just here to do a job, not babysit an amateur sleuth. It was supposed to be a relaxing vacation in sweet, sunny Cape Cod-just me and my beloved brother-but discovering a corpse in our rental house really throws a wrench into our tanning schedule. An all-new, spicy murder mystery from Tessa Bailey, New York Times bestselling author of It Happened One Summer… Sure, it’s a world where Jack the Ripper, Fu Manchu, and Lord Ruthven all exist in practically the same city, but it never feels weird or jarringn. Not only is it a fascinatingly dense suspense novel awash in Gothic and Victorian pulp atmosphere, care is taken as to how each part of the terrifying, vampire-ruled England fits together. While many authors have been known to write alternate versions of classic novels, and even use recognizable literary and historical figures (Tim Powers, for instance, thrives on this), Newman’s dark, dystopian pulp-thriller goes even one step further. If you want a guided tour through Gothic horror, read Anno Dracula by Kim Newman. They are tiny and yellow and have a pineapple finish. Orchard features California redwoods and Ohio apple trees – with a graft of an old variety originally from Worcestershire called a Pitmaston Pineapple. I set myself the challenge to write a novel that features trees, making them silent characters. I have long loved trees – I am an Ambassador for the Woodland Trust, a UK charity dedicated to planting more trees in Britain and protecting its ancient woods. The other is a new novel, At the Edge of the Orchard (8 March 2016). It features 21 contemporary women writers (five of us RSL Fellows) who have written stories inspired by that famous line. One is a collection I edited that is attached to Charlotte’s 200 th it’s called Reader, I Married Him: Stories Inspired by Jane Eyre (7 April 2016). (Poor Anne is rarely considered – though she should be, as The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is a cracking novel.) I am in the Charlotte camp, for Emily – like Bryon – is just too extreme for me. Recently I’ve been working with the Bronte Parsonage on Charlotte Bronte’s bicentenary (21 April 2016), and discovered there are two Bronte groups: the Charlottes and the Emilys. When I was invited to become an RSL Fellow and told I would sign the register with either Byron’s or Dickens’ pen, I’m afraid there was no choice there: it had to be Dickens. Tracy Chevalier was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2008. But every smoldering glance from the surly, handsome duke calls to the long-buried reckless wanton inside Susanna.
